A Highland Song puts you in the shoes of Moira McKinnon, a runaway teen navigating the treacherous, breathtaking Scottish Highlands to reach her uncle's lighthouse by the sea. It’s a brilliant blend of 2D platforming, light but immersive survival mechanics, and exhilarating rhythm-game moments. You're not just moving from left to right or up and down; you're exploring a sprawling, multi-layered environment, uncovering secret paths, and bounding in time to electrifying folk music as you race against the elements.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is an essential masterpiece for long-time fans, delivering a profoundly emotional and cinematic send-off for one of gaming's greatest icons.

Halo Campaign Evolved delivers a tight, 10-to-12-hour blast from start to finish that perfectly balances modern conventions with classic magic.

Marvel's Wolverine drops you straight into the adamantium-laced skeleton of Marvel’s most iconic, cigar-chomping mutant. Unlike the sprawling, sky-scraping sandbox of Insomniac's Spider-Man, Logan's adventure trades open-world for a tight, linear, narrative-driven action-adventure structure.

Ghost Recon Wildlands is a massive, open-world tactical shooter that drops you and up to three friends (or AI squadmates) behind enemy lines in a beautiful but deadly recreation of Bolivia. Your overarching goal is to systematically dismantle the Santa Blanca drug cartel, hunting down regional bosses across varied biomes to eventually draw out their elusive leader, El Sueño. The gameplay loop is a highly addictive mix of reconnaissance and execution—you'll spend your time using drones to scout enemy positions, coordinating synchronized sniper shots, and infiltrating heavily guarded outposts using a massive arsenal of customizable weapons and hijacked vehicles.

OMEA is a pure, unadulterated RPG tabletop or adventure game-like experience brought to digital life. For this early hands-on, we were given access to a single, self-contained demo adventure called Odin’s Trial, where you play as a Viking washed up on a frozen, unforgiving island. Your goal is simple: survive the freezing cold, navigate the locals, and hunt or survive a mythical Beast. But how you go about that is entirely up to you. There are no dialogue trees here. You have a 512-character box to type or speak your actions, and the game’s custom narrative engine— supposedly trained on a massive library of creative fiction—interprets your words and continues the story.

Supermassive Games has carved out a very specific, entertaining niche for couch co-op horror nights, and Directive 8020 continues that tradition well. I recently ran through the campaign with two mostly non-gamer friends, splitting the character roster among the three of us. As a gripping, interactive sci-fi movie that you can theorize about on the couch while the plot unfolds, it does its job admirably. However, as an actual video game, it introduces a few clunky mechanics and pacing issues that occasionally drag down the stellar setting.

We finally have a new James Bond game in 007 First Light, and it completely blew past my expectations. Everyone assumed the studio behind the modern Hitman trilogy would just slap a tuxedo on Agent 47 and call it a day, but this is a completely different beast. It trades the massive puzzle-box sandboxes for a tightly paced, highly cinematic origin story that genuinely feels like a blockbuster Hollywood film from start to finish. It’s a wild ride that nails the raw, reckless energy of a young James Bond while delivering some of the best action mechanics I've played in years.

Persona 5 Strikers rolls up not as some cheap, slapped-together spin-off, but as Persona 5-2 in everything but name and combat. It trades the turn-based menus for frantic real-time action, giving us a summer road trip that feels incredibly refreshing, tightly focused, and surprisingly essential to the overall lore.

Resident Evil Requiem throws you into a gorgeous, terrifying experiment that mashes the creeping, claustrophobic terror of the modern titles right up against the heavy-hitting, battle-tested action of the classics. It is a wildly ambitious juggling act that absolutely nails the moment-to-moment gameplay, even if it occasionally trips over its own feet trying to rush you to the finish line.

Infection Free Zone is a real-time strategy title uses open-source real-world map data to let you set up a zombie survival colony absolutely anywhere on Earth, using REAL LIFE maps. When the menu first booted up and suggested a starting location based on my actual, literal neighborhood, I was instantly hooked.

33 Immortal's setup is simple: you and 32 other players drop into a sprawling map with one goal—survive, gear up, and take down a massive boss. It structurally borrows a lot from the Battle Royale genre, but flips the script entirely by making it fully cooperative. You aren't hunting each other; you're just trying to keep the group alive. The pacing feels less like a traditional roguelite and much closer to Diablo 3’s Adventure Mode, where you rove across the map completing minor feats, knocking out regional objectives, and hoovering up upgrades before the big showdown.

You know that exact moment in a city builder where you zoom all the way in just to watch some tiny digital person walk down a street you placed? Town to City takes that specific flavor of dopamine and absolutely crushes it. Exiting early access to deliver its fully realized 1.0 version, it completely discards the sterile, spreadsheet-driven mentality of traditional city management games. Instead, it hands you the keys to a charming, Mediterranean-inspired sandbox, tells you to throw away the ruler, and asks you to just build something beautiful piece by piece. It is messy. It is organic. And it is incredibly hardware-hungry.

Paralives—a new, scrappy, hand-drawn-esque indie game built by people that feels like they understand the soul of the genre. Booting up the freshly dropped Early Access build of Paralives feels like stepping into a true modern successor with a touch of Indie flavor. But it is also, undeniably, a very rough draft.

If you’ve been enjoying the trend of playing major PlayStation hits on your PC rig, the party is officially winding down. According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, PlayStation is drastically shifting gears. Moving forward, their massive, single-player blockbusters—like Ghost of Yōtei and Marvel’s Wolverine—are staying locked to the PS5. While multiplayer games like Marathon will still hit PC to keep player counts healthy, Sony is drawing a hard line around their narrative adventures.

If you grew up playing tower defense mods or RTS campaigns just to see how effectively your walls could hold enemy attacks, Diplomacy is Not an Option is your playground, A Medieval Fantasy RTS that is a mix of tower defense, horde survival, RTS, and base building genres.

Sometimes you just want to turn your brain off and build something pretty without worrying about resource management, tech trees, or a dodging enemy attacks. That is exactly the itch Summerhouse tries to scratch. It’s a tiny, lo-fi (optional Pixel Art) building toy that strips away the "game" and leaves you with nothing but a blank canvas and a stack of shingles. It’s meant to be a digital chill-out session, but while the vibes are relaxing, a few clunky design choices keep it from being the seamless escape it wants to be.

Black Myth: Wukong is an action-RPG rooted deeply in the 16th-century Chinese literary classic, Journey to the West. Players step into the fur of the "Destined One," a monkey warrior who bears a striking resemblance to the legendary Sun Wukong. The story isn't just a simple retelling; it’s a soulful journey where you retrace the footsteps of the original Monkey King, seeking to recover lost relics and perhaps reclaim a legacy that was shattered long ago. It’s a narrative-heavy experience, packed with cinematic flair and a deep reverence for its mythological roots.

The legacy of Final Fantasy has always been defined by evolution, but few shifts were as seismic as the move from the strategic, menu-driven command systems of the past to the frantic, real-time action of the modern era. Final Fantasy XV represents the definitive turning point in that saga—a moment where the series traded the safety of turn-based combat for a high-octane, open-world experience. It was an ambitious gamble that aimed to bridge the gap between classic RPG depth and the immediate, kinetic energy of a character-action game.

ShantyTown is a creative, stress-free puzzle game that also happens to be a bite-sized city builder. Eschewing the complex logistics of power grids, budgetary concerns, or population happiness, it focuses on the simple, tactile joy of placing colorful structures in cramped, but charming ShantyTown spaces. It’s a game that respects your time and your creativity, offering a "cozy" experience that feels genuinely restorative without all the pressures and challenges of a typical city builder..

Tiny Bookshop is a cozy management sim that puts you behind the wheel of a mobile bookstore. Set in the picturesque town of Bookstonbury, the game tasks you with stocking shelves, decorating your trailer, and becoming the community's go-to literary expert. It is a title designed for the "quiet gaming" crowd, focusing on the simple, meditative rhythm of matching the right story to the right reader.

Better late than never! 2025 has been an absolute whirlwind for the industry. From the quiet, snowy peaks of the Yotei mountains to the chaotic, mud-caked battlefields of medieval Bohemia, this year has proven that whether it's a massive AAA sequel or a tight, experimental indie, the bar for "immersion" has been set higher than ever before.

Persona 5 Royal is the definitive edition of Atlus's award-winning JRPG, thrusting players into the double life of a high school student in modern-day Tokyo. By day, you navigate the complexities of teenage life – exams, part-time jobs, and relationships. By night, you are a Phantom Thief, entering the Metaverse to steal the distorted desires of corrupt individuals. This enhanced release expands the original with a new arc, new characters, and refined mechanics.

Arc Raiders is a third-person extraction shooter that drops players into a sci-fi post-apocalyptic world dominated by ruthless ‘Arc” machines. Unlike the grueling marathons of its contemporaries, it offers a refined, high-stakes experience that respects your time, blending intense PvPvE combat with a satisfying loot-and-extract loop that feels fair for solos and squads alike.

How is it possible that a short game like Dispatch is this jam-packed with absolutely cool, hilarious, and outright epic moments? A lot of “short” narrative games feel like extended demos or proof-of-concept experiments. Dispatch feels like a short but fully realized eight-episode season that just happens to be interactive.

How do you follow up a game that redefined its genre and was universally praised as a modern masterpiece? In Hades II, Supergiant Games has answered that impossible question with a resounding success. The original Hades perfected the rogue-lite formula with kickass combat, endless procedural mechanics, and clever, character-driven storytelling. Yet, incredibly, Hades II has managed to top every single aspect of the first game and made them better.

The series fell hard, but Battlefield 6 has managed to pull off an undeniable turnaround, leading to one of the biggest selling launches in the franchise's history. It’s a massive comeback, succeeding where its predecessor failed. However, behind that success, Battlefield 6 still doesn't quite hit the notes required to be considered the ultimate Battlefield experience.

Ghost of Yotei, the newest installment in the acclaimed feudal Japan action series, shifts the stage to Ezo/Hokkaido Japan, introducing a new protagonist, Atsu, and a razor-sharp revenge narrative. Set during a tumultuous period, the game follows Atsu as she embraces the path of the Ghost to hunt down her targets. While built upon the foundations of its predecessors, Yotei immediately distinguishes itself by prioritizing refined gameplay flow and anti-fatigue design over overwhelming map density, setting it up as a truly modern open-world experience.

Split Fiction is an exclusively two-player experience defined by its literal split screen. One player navigates a high-fantasy setting of elves, dragons, and ancient ruins. The other exists in a neon-drenched, chrome-plated sci-fi world full of robots and laser grids. The brilliance lies in how these two separate realities constantly overlap, making it arguably one of the most creative level and game mechanic designs for a co-op game, or any video game, ever.

The stars finally lined up, and I was able to play Cyberpunk 2077 almost five years after its release. Honestly, I didn’t even know what to expect. My hype and expectations for the game have been on a rollercoaster these past few years, but I can honestly say the experience of playing it for the first time in 2025 was still beyond what I expected, given its history.

Haven is a compelling, highly stylized adventure that excels as a genuine slice-of-life romantic story in a unique science fiction setting. Though often classified as an RPG or survival game, its true appeal lies in its cozy atmosphere and rhythmic flow. You follow two fugitives, Yu and Kay, as they glide across beautiful, fragmented alien landscapes to survive and strengthen their bond.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is a triumphant action RPG built on a foundation of compelling systems. The game's addictive Nemesis, Follower, and Fortress systems create a cycle of conquest and personal narrative that makes every encounter feel unique. The fluid free-flow combat and deep progression mechanics combine for a deeply rewarding experience.

Disco Elysium is a masterclass in storytelling and role-playing, combining deep, witty dialogue with a haunting atmosphere and innovative mechanics that redefine what RPGs can be.

Doom: Dark Ages refines classic fast-paced combat with streamlined mechanics and tight level design, delivering a solid and satisfying experience despite some simplified visuals.

The Alters surprised me as one of the most compelling strategy/survival games this year. At first glance, it reminded me of Fallout Shelter or XCOM, but it quickly reveals deeper, thought-provoking themes wrapped inside an addictive base-building experience.

Death Stranding 2 refines the unique, contemplative gameplay of its predecessor with polished mechanics, an epic story, and a bold, niche approach that challenges mainstream gaming norms.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 builds on the immersive medieval RPG experience with deep roleplaying, branching quests, and a richly detailed world, despite some quirks in combat and bugs.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 reinvents turn-based RPGs with a unique blend of story, lore, and a mix of turn-based and real-time combat, backed by strong voice acting and soundtrack.

Star Wars Outlaws delivers solid gunplay and stunning environments, but suffers from a lackluster story and some suspension-of-disbelief moments, especially in stealth gameplay.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is an RPG that practically bursts with style and confidence. It takes the familiar tropes of high fantasy—kings, curses, and a sprawling magical world—and infuses them with Persona energy.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows tones down RPG elements compared to recent Assassin’s Creed titles, delivering accessible stealth and combat with a strong story and stunning immersive environments.

Avowed surprised me with a deep RPG experience, blending strong exploration, tactical combat, and meaningful roleplaying despite some frustrations with loot and scaling.

Final Fantasy XVI delivers a dark, complex story far removed from nostalgia, with strong cinematic action, a dynamic combat system that grows over time, and impressive medieval-themed visuals.

A look back at the five games that defined my year, based on hours played and unforgettable moments.

Aliens: Dark Descent offers intense squad-based tactical combat but struggles with frustrating level design, limited formation control, and some immersion-breaking bugs.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle surprises with its effective first-person perspective, engaging puzzles, and a combat style that perfectly captures Indy’s character, despite some rudimentary gameplay elements.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard offers an action-oriented RPG experience with a rich story and character-driven quests, despite some controversy over art style and quest bloat.

Dragon's Dogma II is a highly anticipated sequel with unique party and combat mechanics but suffers from severe optimization issues, rushed story pacing, and technical drawbacks.

Batman Arkham Knight delivers the ultimate Batman experience with an expansive Gotham, refined combat, and the long-awaited Batmobile, though it occasionally leans too heavily on vehicle segments.

Batman Arkham Origins is a solid prequel that refines the series’ formula, offering a darker story and a more open Gotham, but it falls short of the polish and impact of its predecessors.

Batman Arkham City expands the series into an open-world setting, delivering more freedom, refined combat, and deep exploration, while maintaining the dark tone and tight gameplay.

Batman Arkham Asylum is the origin of the acclaimed Arkham series. Its tight combat, horror vibe, and claustrophobic levels still deliver a thrilling superhero experience years later.

I recently played both games of The Hellblade Saga, starting with Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice first in anticipation of the then-upcoming Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, then playing Hellblade II afterward when it released.

For the past few months, there is only one game that has mostly kept me busy playing throughout sleepness nights and weekends, and you're probably tired of hearing about it. Helldivers 2. A coop shooter with hardcore elements and action-packed cinematic gameplay.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth continues the saga with a more open world, refined combat, and a story leaning heavily on nostalgia and fan service, delivering a solid experience for longtime fans.

The game introduces players to a world ravaged by the Stardust, an alien entity infesting everything, turning them into monstrous forms. As a Meta-Human, players harness the power of Stardust to survive, fight, build, and explore in a world where humanity is on the brink of extinction.

✨Overview From its indie spin-off roots to its present status that I would describe as the current flagship JRPG game series, Persona has undeniably come a long way. Now, it is venturing into even more genres with successful experiments, beginning with games like Persona 5 Strikers featuring real-time combat and, most recently, Persona 5 Tactica, adopting a Final Tactics-style grid-based combat system.

Persona 5 Tactica is a strategic 'tactics RPG' spin-off developed by Atlus and P-Studio, released on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch. Set during the events of Persona 5, the Phantom Thieves find themselves in the 'Kingdoms', facing an armed group called Legionnaires.

The Division has always been described by me and my peers as 'Diablo with guns,' and this description holds true. It's a looter shooter with Action RPG elements, which can be quite addicting. However, I have always struggled to reconcile the concept of its realistic, grounded setting with its RPG mechanics. Suspension of disbelief is one thing, but seeing a Diablo-like game in a shooter's skin felt odd to me. Ordinary individuals with guns in our real world, yet they need to find legendary firearms to defeat bullet sponge enemies that are also supposed to be humans. Despite this, The Division's system works exceptionally well once you immerse yourself in gameplay.

The Division Resurgence, one of Ubisoft's installments in the popular action RPG series (alongside the upcoming The Division Heartland), brings the post-apocalyptic world of The Division to mobile devices. This fully-fledged third-person shooter attempts to capture the essence of its console predecessors while catering to the unique challenges and opportunities presented by mobile gaming. As a player with an extensive history in the franchise, diving into the mobile adaptation raised questions about how well the gritty realism and addictive gameplay loop of The Division could be translated to the smaller screen.

The core gameplay of Tokyo Ghoul: Break the Chains revolves around turn-based card battles. RoboCop: Rogue City is one of the most surprising game releases this year (and one of the most unexpected announcements from as far back as 2021). Just when you might have thought that RoboCop isn't the pop culture icon it once was, it has returned from dormancy and come back to life. Developing a video game adaptation of an action movie from 1987 isn't typically a top priority for most developers and publishers these days. However, Teyon and Nacon aren't your typical companies. Fortunately, they understandably want to capitalize on the coolness of '80s action movies, having previously delivered the mildly excellent Terminator: Resistance in 2019. And now, we have RoboCop: Rogue City.

✨Overview Starstride is an online hack and slash action RPG where dragons and magic meet space travel and technology. I had the opportunity to play a seemingly very early version of the game, which is currently in development, and it holds a lot of promise. The game is planned for release on both mobile and PC (Steam), although a clear release timeline has not been provided yet.

The game was originally released on PC (Steam) last year for an upfront cost of $18, but I had the privilege of trying out a pre-release build of the Android version, and I must say, it transitions quite seamlessly to the mobile platform, if not even better suited for it.

If you have played twin-stick shooters and retro pixel-style rogue-lites, then Metal Mind should feel familiar you, The gameplay mechanics of Metal Mind follow a classic twin-stick shooter formula, but with a twist. It’s actually a “single-stick” shooter because aiming is already done automatically. You just have to fire the weapon, or activate abilities.

Lies of P Ever since Dark Souls' success in 2011, there has been no shortage of these so-called Souls-like games. And now, we have another game with Lies of P, and it's one of the most promising entries yet in the Souls-like genre.

Lies of P offers a fresh twist on the classic story of Pinocchio, set against the backdrop of the enchanting 19th century Belle Époque era. The game plunges players into the city of Krat, a place powered by the mysterious mineral Ergo but now plagued by a frenzy that has turned its puppet inhabitants against humanity. The game weaves a dark and compelling tale of a city torn apart by greed and the lust for power. Unlike recent entries that emphasized open-world exploration and RPG elements, Mirage aims to provide a more linear and story-driven experience. For fans who have longed for the days of parkour, stealth, and close-quarter combat, this return to basics is a welcome back change.

Assassin's Creed Mirage promises to be a refreshing return to the franchise's roots. Set against the historical backdrop of Baghdad, the game takes us back to the early years of the series, emphasizing parkour, stealth, and the art of assassination—a style reminiscent of the beloved Altair and Ezio eras. It's a deliberate shift away from the sprawling open-world RPGs and health sponges of enemies that have become the norm in recent Assassin's Creed titles.

When it comes to fighting games, there are three distinct types of players - those who crave for an immersive story, the folks, friends, and families who gather for local multiplayer showdowns, and the competitive souls who venture into the online arena. Well, personally, I fall into the first two categories, and I can confidently say that Mortal Kombat 1 delivers a fatal knockout punch of fun for both camps.

In Monster Hunter Now, players explore their surroundings to locate, track, and engage with various monsters and creatures from the Monster Hunter series. The gameplay involves hunting monsters, gathering resources, upgrading your gear, and engaging in fast-paced sub-minute battles. The battles are quick --- not as lengthy and epic as the mainline games --- but I find the bite-sized nature of it fun and just fits the AR-based nature of the game perfectly.

Whether that journey has been for better or worse, well, I'd let my review speak for itself.

Developed by Shift Up, Goddess of Victory: Nikke, or Nikke is a free-to-play sci-fi shooter that has garnered attention for its action-packed gameplay and, well, it's rather unique exaggerated physics. The game features a cast of buxom waifu characters, each armed to the teeth and ready for action. While the gameplay itself is no joke, what really sets Nikke apart is its over the shoulder and cover action, and playful approach to character movement, where the recoil from shooting causes certain assets to, shall we say, exhibit quite noticeable jiggle. It's unapologetically over-the-top, and players have embraced it for its fan service fun.

The latest collaboration between Goddess of Victory: Nikke and Nier: Automata is now live! Both Goddess of Victory: Nikke (or Nikke for short) and Nier: Automata have not been short of collaboration events with other franchises, such as Chainsaw Man with Nikke, or Nier: Automata with even more ridiculous crossovers like Rainbow Six: Siege, PUBG, and Fall Guys. However, both games might have found a match made in heaven with what might be the most sensical crossover yet, featuring very similar themes: sexy girls fighting aliens and robots.
