This is probably the first time we are getting a 1:1 mobile port of a technically and visually impressive AAA game, in the same year.

The Division has always been described by me and my peers as 'Diablo with guns,' and this description holds true. It's a looter shooter with Action RPG elements, which can be quite addicting. However, I have always struggled to reconcile the concept of its realistic, grounded setting with its RPG mechanics. Suspension of disbelief is one thing, but seeing a Diablo-like game in a shooter's skin felt odd to me. I never was a big Super Mario fan, but I did play a lot of it during my NES and SNES childhood days. Two allied factions, Neoterrans and Wokens, are at war against a mysterious alien civilization. Your character is one of the few powerful fighters remaining after a mysterious defeat at the hands of the enemy's leader.

✨Overview Metal Mind is a pixel rogue-lite stick shooter where players take on the role of a mech that can change its parts and gear on the fly. The game was originally released on PC (Steam) last year for an upfront cost of $18, but I had the privilege of trying out a pre-release build of the Android version, and I must say, it transitions quite seamlessly to the mobile platform, if not even better suited for it.

If you have played twin-stick shooters and retro pixel-style rogue-lites, then Metal Mind should feel familiar you, The gameplay mechanics of Metal Mind follow a classic twin-stick shooter formula, but with a twist. It’s actually a “single-stick” shooter because aiming is already done automatically. You just have to fire the weapon, or activate abilities.

I was fortunate enough to be able to try out the Android demo for the upcoming Concerto on White, and I was pleasantly impressed by its blend of rhythm-based gaming, musical simulation, and visual novel style storytelling.

Concerto on White consists of two main ideas blended into one harmonious composition. The school academy life, and actual rhythm game gameplay. Recently announced a few days ago with a trailer and mini-game (more info further down below) to go along with it, the game is set to be released for PC and PlayStation, offering a multiplayer cooperative puzzle adventure experience.

Players have the option to spend real money within the game to purchase various in-game items and content.

The Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) game series — also previously known as Winning Eleven in some regions — has certainly come a long way. From its PlayStation “Goal Storm” roots to its rebranding into the now-fledgling free-to-play game eFootball, and now with its newest yearly iteration: eFootball 2024. Whether that journey has been for better or worse, well, I'd let my review speak for itself.

SYNCED is a looter shooter with a gameplay that revolves around players venturing into the semi-open world to clear out increasingly challenging segments that are infested with nano creatures. These missions culminate in intense boss fights that require teamwork, strategy, and coordination when in team-based mode, but the game is also viable when played Solo, such is my experience for the majority of my PvE playthrough.

In addition, it features fine graphics and smooth performance, making it one of the better ARPG options on mobile today.

Developed by Shift Up, Goddess of Victory: Nikke, or Nikke is a free-to-play sci-fi shooter that has garnered attention for its action-packed gameplay and, well, it's rather unique exaggerated physics. The game features a cast of buxom waifu characters, each armed to the teeth and ready for action. While the gameplay itself is no joke, what really sets Nikke apart is its over the shoulder and cover action, and playful approach to character movement, where the recoil from shooting causes certain assets to, shall we say, exhibit quite noticeable jiggle. It's unapologetically over-the-top, and players have embraced it for its fan service fun.

The latest collaboration between Goddess of Victory: Nikke and Nier: Automata is now live! Both Goddess of Victory: Nikke (or Nikke for short) and Nier: Automata have not been short of collaboration events with other franchises, such as Chainsaw Man with Nikke, or Nier: Automata with even more ridiculous crossovers like Rainbow Six: Siege, PUBG, and Fall Guys. However, both games might have found a match made in heaven with what might be the most sensical crossover yet, featuring very similar themes: sexy girls fighting aliens and robots.

Wayfinder was recently released in paid early access form last August 18, debuting amidst a host of server problems that garnered an initial overwhelmingly negative reaction. More recently, servers have been patched up and the queues have gone from literal hours to just a minute or less. More than a week after its release, I was finally able to personally experience the game and see firsthand what all the fuss is about.

Valorant is coming with a new update (Patch 7.0) this June 27, which introduces the highly requested Team Deathmatch mode along with three exclusive maps made specifically for the game mode: Piazza, District, and Kasbah. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, the beloved Nintendo DS puzzle-adventure game from Capcom, has returned in a remarkable remastered edition for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC platforms.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective has been revitalized with completely HD graphics and flawless animations, breathing new life into its charming world. The game is set to be released on June 30, 2023, but there is a demo on Steam already available for players to try. I was able to play the demo version that allows players to experience the story up to Chapter 2. Notably, any saved data from the demo can be seamlessly transferred to the full version of the game once players purchase it.

Metria is an action RPG currently in development for mobile devices. It is currently conducting an Alpha test from June 13, 2023, to June 20, 2023 and players are free to test out this title. Since this is an Alpha test, expect this to be in a very early state, and not even close to playable and enjoyable.

Street Fighter 6 has come a long way. It features a 18-character roster of both new and returning fighters rendered in new Full 3D art style that looks much closer now to contemporaries like Tekken, than the classic 2D or artistic visuals of Street Fighter, however, the spirit of Street Fighter is still felt here. Street Fighter 6’s roster of 18 characters is mostly familiar, with 12 returning characters and six being entirely new.

I was fortunate enough to be able to play Diablo IV in Early Access, and I have to tell you guys, it is amazing. It is everything I had hoped it would be, coming from Diablo 3 and 2.

The game features a gacha system for unlocking and acquiring new heroes, each with their own unique traits and tiers.

Playing Strike Buster Prototype, it definitely reminded me of the retro arcade space shoot ‘em ups I’ve played in my childhood during my PS1 days, such as Ray Crisis and Einhander. However, it blends retro aesthetics with modern gameplay elements such as a physics system and twin stick controls. The game is already available on PC and Switch, but I was able to try out the Android demo version of the game, bringing the arcade shooter into the mobile platform.

Somnolent: Action RPG Fantasy is a third person action RPG game set in a world where dreams exist and can be entered by warriors called dreamwalkers.

The eponymous Somnolent is a world called the dreamcatcher where the game is also set. It is a place where good dreams pass through, while bad dreams get stuck. In layman's terms, Somnolent functions as a filter. This requires the dreamwalkers — warriors summoned to defend dreams — to constantly purge Somnolent of the bad dreams that get trapped in the lands and the nightmarish monsters spawned by them.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an action-adventure game and the much awaited sequel to 2017’s award-winning game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, boasting the same core gameplay mechanics including open world exploration and a non-linear story.

I played Door Kickers on PC many years ago and now, playing it’s mobile port, it brings the same intense and strategic gameplay that made it a hit on the larger screen. Developed by KillHouse Games, Door Kickers offers an intense mix of tactical planning, real-time execution, and satisfyingly challenging missions — assuming it goes well.

Brotato is a survival roguelite wave shooter playable with one hand. Originally released for PCs as an early access, it has now been recently released on Android and iOS as a full title, after going into an open beta just recently. This mobile release brings the game closer to feature parity with the existing PC version.

Persona 5: The Phantom X is a role-playing game with turn-based combat, slice of life elements, and an anime-inspired art style. A mobile spin-off of the mainline game Persona 5, it takes us back to Japan and reintroduces us to the Phantom Thieves with a brand new protagonist and fresh roster of characters. It is catered more to the mobile platform market — a first in the series, and is now currently in beta (Android) available for China. A PC version is also available for testing, it is a full-on game client and not an emulated Android version.

Terra Nil is exactly that game for a change. A strategy game where players construct and deconstruct terraforming structures with the ultimate goal of restoring the land.

I tried out Flash Party recently, coinciding with the recent update Season 9 and I got to say, after going in blind in playing it, the graphics and gameplay actually wowed me. I am using an old 2018 flagship android phone to play it and the visuals still look crisp and nice with console levels of quality that even looks better than the Switch’s own Super Smash Bros.

After Resident Evil 2 and 3 were remade, the next logical target (aside from Code Veronica) was a Resident Evil 4 remake. I was one of the naysayers back then saying that Resident Evil 4, with its still decent 3D graphics, doesn’t need a remake yet. Boy I was wrong. This first impression is all about me eating my words and playing myself, because let me tell you, Resident Evil 4 Remake (or just Resident Evil 4) is a beautiful reimagining of the 2005 masterpiece.

I played the Demo of the newly released game titled Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars Chapter 0. The Demo is monikered “Chapter 0” and is meant to introduce us to the Voice of Cards trilogy which started in 2021 and ended in 2022, now recently released for the Mobile platform. More specifically, Chapter 0 serves as a prelude to the first game in the series. It is only a short demo and I was pretty done after an hour or so.

Lucid Lenses’ story is deep rooted in astronomy and the study of the cosmos. It features two star-crossed lives turned lovers living seemingly normal lives in somewhat unique circumstances; the man, Reymond, seems to be a smart astrophysicist locked in prison, and the woman, Emily, a university student studying astronomy, is accompanied by her blue bird that she can communicate with.

Mighty DOOM is a top down single handed rogue-lite shooter set in the DOOM universe. It is available for Android and iOS as a free-to-play title with in-app purchases.

This is what happens when even a one-handed game like Vampire Survivors is still too much work. We now enter the realm of Idle and AFK games where you don’t even have to do anything to play and progress. Alice, Final Weapon : Idle RPG is another entry in this popular mobile genre.

Storyteller is a unique drag and drop puzzle game with fascinating novel mechanics and a cute medieval inspired artstyle. You are given multiple empty panels for a given scenario, plus a multitude of settings and characters to place per scenario. It’s up to you to arrange them in a way that will fit the scenario’s objectives. Be it somebody dying, living happily ever after, or getting revenge; you need to satisfy the objective in order to solve the puzzle.

Alice, Final Weapon : Idle RPG , or ALICE is an idle monster killing RPG game with typical anime-style visuals and cel-shaded graphics, where players infinitely kill monsters in a never-ending cycle. There is no in-game story, and the whole focus is the non-stop gameplay.

Slenderman RE: Light Edition is an adventure horror mobile game based on the Slender Man supernatural character. It is played in first person view and plays like an adventure game where you are to interact with the environment in order to progress.

Dead by Daylight Mobile is an asymmetric 4v1 multiplayer survival horror game where a team of four players must cooperate with each other in order to escape a killer hunting them.

The gameplay of Thunder Samurai Defend Village is simple. Enemies come from both sides, you can either tap on the left to attack left, or tap on the right to attack right. You can activate a special lightning attack when fully charged. No need to move, jump, block, or do some platforming maneuvers. Each enemy dies in a single hit and the game seemingly plays infinitely in a singular level, with high scores being the one and only end goal.

I tried out the recent revamped mobile version of the game called Dead by Daylight Mobile and had the chance to explore its various features and gameplay.

Vampire Survivors might not seem like a really good nor addictive game judging from the pixel art graphics, but trust me, it is one of the most addicting games that have come out in recent years.

Bayonetta is a series that has never been known for its immersive storytelling and child friendly nature, but that is about to change with the release of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon. Teased as a secret chapter in Bayonetta 3, it is a full blown adventure game with a children’s book style approach. It is now available for the Nintendo Switch as an exclusive, following Bayonetta 2 and 3.

I got the chance to play the early access beta test of the upcoming game Diablo IV, and my experience with the gameplay has been nothing short of amazing so far. It still looks and plays like a proper Diablo game, with respect to both Diablo II and III.

Vampire Survivors is a 2D survival rogue-lite game that is completely playable with just one hand. Players just need to control the character’s movements, and that’s the whole control scheme of the game. The player character automatically attacks and defends itself against waves of waves of monsters and have to survive as long as they can, usually up to 20 to 30 minutes.

Evertale is a JRPG turn-based combat game that draws heavy inspiration from the Pokemon series of video games, by featuring monster and character collecting aspects, packaged in a gacha gaming manner.

HITMAN World of Assassination is a stealth-action sandbox game that puts us in the shoes of the genetically engineered clone named Agent 47, a highly skilled assassin working for an organization called the International Contract Agency. Originally released for the PS2 very late in its lifecycle, Persona 4 has since been re-released for the PS Vita years later and more recently on PC a few years ago. Now, Persona 4 Golden is finally widely accessible, having just been released for the PS4, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch yesterday.

A classic JRPG from the PS2 and PSP era has now been brought forward in time, re-released and remastered for modern systems, and in my opinion, they ported the wrong version.

NeverAwake is a twin-stick shooter, but it’s also a single-stick shooter. It’s a side-scrolling game, but it’s also a vertical scroller. It’s sleek and flashy, but also gruesome and messy. This duality approach might seem like a genre identity issue for NeverAwake, but really, it is a unique fresh take on the shoot ‘em up genre.

There's a certain cuteness in this game; the playful nature of the children, the slice of life presentation, and the lighthearted puzzling elements. At the same time, Children of Silentown is spooky and creepy; from the Tim Burton-esque art style with big white creepy eyes, to the foreboding nature of the story with nightmares and monsters.

As a kid, I have always been fascinated by trains, well I think most of us were. Beyond that childhood fantasy and riding trains for travel, I never really got interested in trains as a grown up, until now. Fortunately, we now have SimRail - The Railway Simulator as a brand new addition to the list of growing video game train simulators, the caveat: it’s still in Early Access.

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is an authentic recreation of the classic 90s ninja video games like Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi, and Shadow of the Ninja. The 16-bit music, art style, and gameplay are all captured perfectly without a miss. Going in blind, you would think it is a remaster or port of a real existing 90s game.

What UnderDungeon lacks in color, it makes up for with an aggressive monochromatic stylized 1 bit graphics full of life, energy, and a highly stimulating retro music. UnderDungeon is an adventure game inspired by classic dungeon crawlers; brimming with humor, wit, and charm.

ONE PIECE ODYSSEY is something special. A rare occurrence; there’s finally a good Anime game that isn’t a hack and slash or a fighting game, as it instead features a fresh JRPG turn-based combat system. A nice change of pace and a solid design decision worthy of our attention.

Rogue AI Simulator is a roguelite management simulation game where you control an AI that will manage an underground science facility. If the AI – the player — acts suspiciously, the administrators will disconnect the server and shut it down.

Kandria is a newly released hack and slash open world adventure game that you might say has rather simple pixel graphics, but fret not, underneath that surface level simplicity is a complex and expansive open world RPG game that will surely captivate you for hours on end.

From the looks of it, you might not think of Glimmer in Mirror as a metroidvania platform shooter. In fact every fiber of my being is telling me that it isn’t, it feels more like a flashy side scrolling hack and slash game, but Glimmer in Mirror is indeed a shooter in a cute anime (chibi) disguise, and that’s refreshing to see.

We have another point-and-click puzzle game ported to the mobile platform yet again with Boxville. I’ve just played the demo and it immediately places you right after the beginning of the game. To avoid spoilers, there is no plot or backstory presented, but the world is inhabited by tin-can like humanoid beings living in cute cardboard boxes resembling into a somewhat peaceful city.

Rocco's Island is an atmospheric point-and-click adventure game with a big focus on puzzles and storytelling. Released last year on PC, Rocco's Island: Ring to End the Pain has been recently ported to mobile platforms as Rocco's Island: Pocket Edition. It is exactly the same game on PC, except for the newly adapted touch controls.

We Are The Caretakers is a mix of Grand Strategy, 4X, JRPG, and Squad Management all packed and blended into what they call an afrofuturist art style. It has recently left Early Access on PC and also released for Xbox Series systems. It will be hard to compare this to a single title entirely as many of its aspects are such a fresh crossover of elements from many different games and genres.

Alongside the film is a comic book style retro arcade brawler game that was pulled from stores in 2014, with no way of acquiring a copy. Now, thanks to all the online requests, it is re-released and now available on PC as Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition.

IXION is a new science fiction space opera, wrapped in a game where you need to manage your state of the art colony ship “Tiqqun”. To ensure the survival of humanity amidst the treacherous nature of space, and maybe explore the cosmos and find a new habitable planet for them to colonize.

When I played the original Hello Neighbor back in 2018, It was an intriguing family friendly puzzle stealth horror that was as frustrating as it exhilarating. Hello Neighbor 2 largely maintains the same formula, improving many mechanics from the first game but at the same time never really getting rid of the frustration factor.

Dodge ‘em up is a genre entirely new to me, and so far I like the concept. Swordship is one such game, it takes the notion of shoot ‘em up but removes the shooting part and makes the fundamental gameplay all about the art of dodging and deception.

It may seem like SYNCED is just another typical multiplayer out of thousands in an already heavily saturated market, but for me this game is really cooking something special. Imagine a cooperative / PvP looter shooter, rogue-lite, pokemon-symbiote game in a Skynet meets Zombies premise.

There is no better title for this game other than the name itself “Retro Gadgets”. A sandbox game that is all about designing, theory crafting, tinkering, and building retro style electronic contraptions.

From the makers of the amazing Warhammer: Vermintide series comes another game, now set 40,000 years into the future: Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. This only means stuff like Guns and Chainswords are now available in your arsenal. The gameplay style that started with Left 4 Dead, the first person melee combat perfected by Vermintide, is now circling back to using guns again with Darktide.

At a glance, the gameplay and graphics of Soccer Story looks like a mashup of Pokemon and Stardew Valley with a nice touch of clean 3D graphics, but the comparisons end there, as within Soccer Story is a fun semi-physics driven gameplay that has a very healthy obsession with soccer.

Somerville is a sci-fi adventure / puzzle game where you control a man and his family caught up right in the middle of an alien invasion doomsday scenario. The opening sequence starts relatively slow: what's presented to you is a slice of life in a small farm house: A couple, a toddler, and a dog. The presentation feels very surreal that you almost can relate to it, especially with the random static noise emanating from the family TV. Then the mysterious somber nature ramps up rather quickly into a full blown alien invasion, perfectly capturing that feeling of being randomly caught up in it on a personal level. You can just about see yourself in the character’s shoes while playing. Imagining if such things happened to you and your family instead.

The opening sequence starts relatively slow and gets intense pretty much immediately, perfectly capturing that feeling of being randomly caught up in a sudden alien invasion. There is no dialogue in the game and all of the story is only conveyed through the characters' actions and interactions with the environment, bolstered by the impressive art style and sound design. This is something that is very hard to pull off narratively but Somerville manages to somewhat pull it off anyway.

With how popular rogue-lite games are becoming lately, as well as the consistent popularity of the Ancient Rome setting throughout the years, I’m a bit surprised that we don’t have enough Gladiator style focused games already. Saturating the market like the zombie or world war tropes we have today. That soon is about to change, as we now have We Who Are About to Die, recently released on Early Access.
